The Boise LDS Temple was the first of numerous more functional temples to be built under the direction of President Spencer W. Kimball in the mid 1980s. These temples were built with a new, smaller design that was intended to be more efficient in use and operation. Located on 1211 S. Cole Road just off of I-84 freeway, the temple is situated on nearly 8 acres in all. Ground was broken for construction on December 18, 1982 and the temple was dedicated in May 1984. An addition was completed in February 1987 which includes baptistery, cafeteria, chapel, study rooms, and offices. Comtrol Construction, owned by Ralph and Brian Burk, along with now retired architect Ron Thurber, headed the building of this modern day Gothic temple. The main characteristics this temple has which characterize it as “modern day gothic” are its spires and numerous arches, though they are more curved than the stereotypical Gothic Style.
The Boise LDS Temple is an incredible architectural achievement. Its amazing six spire Gothic design makes it a breath of fresh air in the midst of the modern day chaos that surrounds it. The six symbolic tower-spires give this landmark a distinctive appearance unlike any other building in all of Boise.
