The J.H. Cox house on Warm Springs is one of the most elegant in Boise. It was built in 1906 for realtor Lindley H. Cox and was designed by Tourtellotte & Co. The cost of the house was originally $12,000 and Cox decided to build this house on the best land available so he could get the most out of his house. When it was constructed in 1906, it was known that it was going to be a marvel. It was one of the first houses in Boise to have a sanitary plumbing system.
This house is extremely beautiful and awe inspiring, it’s a shame we couldn’t go inside. This house was held up by these gigantic Ionic style pillars that went around the house so that shows the presence of the Greek revival style in the house. Also the large portion of the house was Colonial. It was made out of wood mostly and painted white. The windows really give it away, there are many single windows and a few doubles thrown in. But the one at the top of the house really gives it away, it is that colonial half circle like window that you see on the colonial style houses.
An interesting aspect of the house is the availability to get outdoors. Counting from the original house there were somewhere around 5 porches including one square shaped one that sat on the very top of the house. Also another feature that shows the colonial style was the chimney you could see the outside edge of the chimney from the outside that was very common in the colonial style houses. The colonial style was also present in the door. The door had a huge window in the middle of it; also on the sides of the door are two windows that are roughly the same height as the door but not the same width. From what I got to see of the inside of the house there are the Greek style Ionic pillars all throughout the house reminding everyone of the presence of the Greek style.
Although the majority of the house is the same as it was when it was built, recently there has been construction on the house. Earlier the house was wider where a porch on the roof stretched, but recently the owners of the house had a portion of the house torn down and one of the porches taken down. That space was used for a drive way for the family’s car and a new fence was put in because since it was built Boise has expanded and they have neighbors now.
